Why You Can’t Feel Your Lower Abs During Workouts

If you mostly feel your lower back, hip flexors, or neck during exercises — you’re not alone. Many people struggle to feel their lower abs working, even when they are doing “all the right exercises.”

Your body naturally tries to find the easiest way to create movement and stabilize itsekf. If the core is not working efficiently, other areas start taking over. The hip flexors may grip, the lower back may arch, or the neck may become tense during exercises that are supposed to target the abs.

This can happen for several reasons. Sometimes the ribs stay lifted and disconnected from the pelvis. Sometimes breathing mechanics make it difficult to engage the deeper abdominal muscles. In other cases, people simply move too fast or use too much range of motion before they can properly control the position.

The issue is often not abs weakness. More commonly, it is a lack of body awareness and breathing control.

Sometimes the ribs stay lifted and disconnected from the pelvis. Sometimes breathing mechanics make it difficult to engage the deeper abdominal muscles. In other cases, people simply move too fast or use too much range of motion before they can properly control the position.

Some common signs of this are:

  • neck tension during ab exercises
  • lower back arching during RDLs, squats or dead bugs
  • core exercises feeling confusing or frustrating
  • abs doming during exercises
Instead of trying harder or adding more difficult exercises, it usually helps to go back to the basics first. Focus on:
  • a slow controlled exhale starting from the pelvic floor
  • gently bringing the ribs down
  • keeping the spine stable during exercises
  • awareness of the pelvis position
  • reducing the range of motion if you lose control

The goal is to help the core support movement without the rest of the body overcompensating.
